The M7-M12 Integration Project is a significant infrastructure development designed to enhance traffic flow and connectivity in Western Sydney. It consists of three main elements:
Widening the M7 Motorway | Constructing the M7-M12 Interchange | Upgrading Elizabeth Drive through the Elizabeth Drive Connection
The M7 Widening will extend the motorway into the median between the Richmond Road overpass and the M5 interchange, adding an extra lane in both directions to meet increasing traffic needs. The M7-M12 Interchange will improve links between the M7 and M12 Motorways, featuring a new entry ramp from Elizabeth Drive. Furthermore, the EDC will enhance Elizabeth Drive, adjust the alignment of Wallgrove and Cecil Roads, and introduce a new exit ramp from the M12 Motorway, boosting both local and regional accessibility.
Since 2023, Witt Consulting has been engaged in temporary works related to structural and geotechnical design, investigation, and construction phase services for the M7-M12 project, including:
- Design of temporary retaining structures: The scope of works includes various critical temporary and permanent structural elements, such as sheet piles and post-and-lagging walls, and shoring wall systems. In addition, hoarding systems used to ensure site safety and security, while slope reinforcement measures are employed where ground stability is a concern. The project also involved crane setups for girder installation, footing installations for temporary support, gravity retaining walls and other forms of temporary ground support. Supporting elements like wingwalls provided where necessary, and finite element analysis utilised to verify structural performance under expected load conditions. The use of heavy steel structures for supporting site sheds, service brackets, temporary signposts, fall restraint anchors, scaffold anchors, wall bracing systems and site fences and barriers, form an essential part of the site’s temporary infrastructure.
- Geotechnical inspections and construction advice: Pile logging for all bridge piles. Subgrade inspections for all pavements on the project. Piling platform design, plate load tests, rock mapping, field classification of materials detailing geotechnical design parameters, and proof rolls.
- Structural condition assessments: Level 2 bridge assessments for 42 existing bridges.
